Job Description:
The Safety / Environmental Compliance Manager at Suminter Nigeria Limited is responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing the company’s Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies across all operational and project sites.
The role ensures full compliance with Nigerian safety regulations, environmental laws, company standards, and client requirements by proactively identifying hazards, monitoring site conditions, managing safety certifications, and preventing workplace incidents.
The position supports safe operational practices across construction, warehouse, logistics, agro-industrial, and project activities while promoting a strong safety culture within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety & Environmental Management:
Develop, implement, and enforce HSE policies, procedures, and Environmental Management Plans across all company operations and project sites.
Ensure compliance with all applicable Nigerian HSE regulations, NESREA standards, labour laws, and client safety requirements.
Conduct routine site inspections, safety audits, and environmental compliance assessments.
Monitor site activities to identify danger zones, unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and environmental risks.
Ensure immediate corrective and preventive actions are implemented to eliminate identified hazards.
Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), risk assessments, and toolbox talks for operational activities.
Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across all operational areas.
Promote continuous HSE awareness and a proactive safety culture among employees and contractors.
Environmental Compliance:
Monitor environmental aspects including waste management, pollution prevention, spill control, housekeeping, and proper disposal of hazardous materials.
Ensure all environmental practices comply with Nigerian environmental regulations and company sustainability standards.
Coordinate environmental inspections and ensure timely resolution of non-conformities.
Equipment & Operational Safety:
Inspect construction equipment, warehouse tools, machinery, forklifts, and operational equipment for defects or unsafe conditions.
Ensure defective equipment is tagged and removed from service immediately.
Monitor contractor and third-party compliance with company HSE standards.
Certification & Regulatory Compliance:
Manage all safety permits, certifications, approvals, and statutory compliance documentation.
Ensure employees, operators, and contractors possess valid safety certifications and required trainings.
Liaise with regulatory agencies, auditors, and external inspectors during compliance audits and inspections.
Maintain updated HSE records, incident reports, inspection logs, and compliance documentation.
Traffic & Site Safety Coordination:
Assist in implementing traffic management and site access control plans.
Coordinate safe movement of vehicles, equipment, and personnel within operational areas.
Training & Incident Management:
Organize safety inductions, emergency drills, HSE trainings, and toolbox meetings for employees and contractors.
Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts.
Prepare detailed incident investigation reports and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
Track HSE performance indicators and prepare monthly safety reports for management review
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree or HND in Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Safety, or related discipline.
- Professional HSE certifications such as:
- NEBOSH
- ISPON
- IOSH
- OSHA
- ISO 45001 certification (added advantage)
- 5–10years of experience in safety and environmental management within construction, manufacturing, agro-processing, logistics, or industrial operations.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian HSE regulations and environmental compliance standards.
- Proven experience managing HSE systems on active project or operational sites.
- Strong hazard identification, incident investigation, and risk management skills.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and enforcement abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HSE reporting systems.
- Strong documentation, reporting, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in high-risk operational and construction
