About Company:

The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly analytical and clinically grounded Patient Safety Specialist to be a cornerstone of the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE). This is a high-impact role designed for a professional who believes that "Zero Harm" is not just a goal, but a measurable standard of care.

Your mission is to architect a "Just Culture"—one where transparency is rewarded and every near-miss is treated as a vital lesson. You will lead the charge in navigating complex clinical workflows, conducting deep-dive investigations into adverse events, and ensuring our operations align with elite international standards like JCI. If you are a certified safety professional who can bridge the gap between rigorous data analytics and compassionate patient care, we invite you to help us define healthcare excellence in Africa.

Requirements:

1. Incident Governance & Forensic Analysis

  • Root Cause Mastery: Lead thorough Root Cause Analyses (RCA) for serious incidents, moving beyond surface-level symptoms to identify the latent systemic failures.

  • Incident Lifecycle Management: Oversee the daily integrity of the incident reporting system, ensuring every event—from near-misses to critical incidents—is classified and tracked with surgical precision.

  • Actionable Intelligence: Transform raw incident data into strategic recommendations for senior leadership, ensuring that "Corrective Action Plans" are robust and sustainable.

2. Proactive Risk Mitigation & Quality Integration

  • Hazard Identification: Perform cross-functional risk assessments across clinical and operational units to identify potential sources of harm before they reach the patient.

  • PDSA Cycle Leadership: Drive Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles at the unit level to test, refine, and implement new safety interventions.

  • Clinical Checkpoints: Collaborate with Pharmacy and Infection Control to develop clinical pathways and checklists that eliminate medication errors and Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs).

3. Safety Culture & Capacity Building

  • The "Just Culture" Initiative: Promote a non-punitive environment that encourages frontline staff to report errors without fear of retribution, focusing on system learning over individual blame.

  • High-Fidelity Training: Design and deliver simulation exercises and safety workshops that integrate core safety principles into the DNA of every hospital department.

  • Interdisciplinary Leadership: Facilitate safety rounds and debrief sessions, acting as the primary resource for both staff and patient safety partners.

Qualifications and Skills:

Professional Profile

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Pharmacy, or Health Administration. A Master’s degree is a distinct advantage.

  • Experience: 3–5 years in a clinical setting, with at least 2 years of direct experience in Patient Safety or Risk Management.

  • Certification: CPPS (Certified Professional in Patient Safety) or an equivalent certification is highly desirable.

Technical & Analytical Skills

  • Regulatory Fluency: Deep knowledge of JCI accreditation standards and international patient safety goals (IPSG).

  • Investigative Grit: Proven ability to conduct complex investigations using formal RCA methodologies.

  • Data Literacy: Proficiency in safety software, Excel, and predictive analytics to identify emerging safety trends.

Core Competencies

  • Influence: The ability to engage and persuade multi-disciplinary teams (Doctors, Pharmacists, Engineers) to adopt safer practices.

  • Integrity: Absolute discretion and ethical conduct in handling sensitive patient and hospital data.

  • Detail Orientation: A meticulous approach to documenting safety indicators and regulatory reports.
