Job Description:

  • The Assistant Chief Laboratory Scientist provides senior supervision of laboratory operations, supporting service leadership, supervising testing and staff, and upholding quality and biosafety.
  • The role is based at a reputable multi-specialist hospital in Nigeria and works closely with the Deputy Chief Laboratory Scientist and the Chief Laboratory Scientist.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior supervision of laboratory operations, supporting the deputy/head in leading the service.
  • Supervise laboratory testing and section work, ensuring standards and throughput.
  • Support rostering, workload allocation and skill-mix.
  • Support biosafety compliance, audit and quality assurance.
  • Supervise, support and appraise junior laboratory staff.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) from a recognised institution. Completion of the required national internship and NYSC, or a valid exemption where applicable.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years of post-registration experience in the relevant profession, including experience at Principal grade or equivalent.
  • Substantial post-registration experience in medical laboratory science practice.
  • Experience supervising and supporting junior medical laboratory science staff.
  • Experience contributing to quality assurance and service improvement.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary hospital team.

Required skills:

  • Knowledge of laboratory quality, biosafety and specimen-handling standards.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory practice across disciplines and of quality management.
  • Ability to supervise rostering, section supervision and skill-mix.
  • Ability to support biosafety, quality assurance and external quality assurance.
  • Incident escalation and equipment/vendor liaison skills.
  • Staff supervision and appraisal skills.
