To establish a world-class financial foundation and institutional governance structure from inception, our client seeks an exceptional executive to fill the position below:
Job Description:
- The Managing Director will provide overall strategic leadership and executive management of the bank, ensuring the successful launch, growth, and sustainability of the institution.
- This role is responsible for building the organizational structure, operational systems, governance frameworks, and commercial strategy required to scale a modern digital microfinance bank while ensuring strict adherence to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) regulations and corporate governance standards.
- Working closely with the Board of Directors, the MD will drive business growth, financial performance, regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and stakeholder confidence.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Institutional Development:
- Develop and execute the bank’s long-term strategic vision and growth roadmap.
- Establish the organizational structure, policies, and governance frameworks.
- Lead the development and execution of annual business plans and performance targets.
- Identify new market opportunities, fintech partnerships, and innovation initiatives.
Business Growth & Market Expansion:
- Drive customer acquisition, deposit mobilization, and lending portfolio growth.
- Develop strategic partnerships with fintechs, corporates, and ecosystem players.
- Position the bank competitively within the digital banking and microfinance sector.
- Promote innovation in financial products and digital service delivery.
Financial Performance & Capital Management:
- Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and performance monitoring.
- Ensure sustainable profitability, asset quality, and liquidity management.
- Monitor financial performance against institutional targets and key performance indicators.
- Support capital strategy and investor engagement where required.
Regulatory Compliance & Corporate Governance:
- Ensure full compliance with CBN regulations, NDIC guidelines, and microfinance banking standards.
- Maintain strong corporate governance and risk management frameworks.
- Liaise with regulators, auditors, and government authorities on behalf of the bank.
- Ensure timely regulatory reporting and audit readiness.
Operations & Institutional Capacity Building:
- Establish efficient operational structures and service delivery frameworks.
- Ensure strong internal controls, operational governance, and risk management systems.
- Drive digital transformation and operational automation initiatives.
- Oversee all business units to ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
Leadership & Organizational Development:
- Build and lead a high-performing executive management team.
- Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and operational excellence.
- Develop talent and implement succession planning across the institution.
- Promote collaboration and high performance across all departments.
Stakeholder, Investor & Public Representation:
- Represent the bank with regulators, investors, and key industry stakeholders.
- Build strong relationships with shareholders, strategic partners, and clients.
- Act as the public spokesperson of the institution when required.
- Maintain strong institutional reputation and stakeholder confidence.
Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or related discipline.
- MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification is highly desirable.
- Professional banking certification such as ACIB or equivalent is an advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum 20 years experience in banking or financial services.
- At least 10 years in executive or senior management leadership roles.
- Demonstrated experience in microfinance banking, fintech, or retail banking leadership.
- Strong track record in institutional growth, regulatory engagement, and financial performance management.
Other Requirements:
- Must meet CBN “Fit and Proper” criteria for Managing Director of a Microfinance Bank.
- Strong reputation for integrity, governance, and regulatory compliance.
- Entrepreneurial mindset suited for startup financial institutions.
Skills:
- Strong strategic leadership within banking or financial services.
- Deep understanding of microfinance banking operations and regulatory frameworks.
