Job Description:
- The Lead Quality Control Officer is responsible for overseeing all food quality, safety, and inventory control processes to significantly reduce product spoilage and customer rejection rates.
- This position is critical for implementing and maintaining rigorous quality standards and ensuring compliance across all product handling and storage operations.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Assurance and Control:
- Develop and execute quality management strategies to drastically minimize product spoilage, which currently represents a significant loss to the business.
- Conduct rigorous, daily checks of all food products (including pineapples, cucumbers, oranges, apples, and grapes) against established product specification cards, ensuring attributes like color, variety, and weight meet standards before shipment.
- Oversee the sorting and handling of products, ensuring deteriorating items (Batch B) are promptly separated from good products (Batch A) to prevent further loss.
Food Safety and Operational Compliance:
- Ensure strict compliance with all food safety standards, hygiene protocols, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) across the facility.
- Manage and enforce proper storage procedures, including controlling temperatures and ensuring items are not clustered together (e.g., separating items like apples that release ethylene gas from other sensitive produce).
- Implement standardized ordering procedures, requiring the measurement of incoming bulk items by weight to confirm quantity and quality specifications are met upon arrival.
Team Leadership and Process Improvement:
- Lead, manage, and mentor the Quality Control department staff, including the QC Officer, inventory documentation staff, and food handlers.
- Foster a collaborative environment where team members, including store handlers, feel empowered to raise concerns and offer advice on quality control and storage practices.
- Ensure all processes, from product intake to delivery, are structured and documented, with all incoming items and bad products accurately logged into the system.
Requirements:
- A relevant degree (e.g., Bachelor of Science) in Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, or a closely related field.
- Possession of a recognized Food Safety Certification (e.g., HACCP, ISO 22000, or equivalent).
- Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in Quality Control or Food Technology, preferably within the perishable goods or Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry.
- Proven management and leadership skills with the ability to implement structure and drive continuous improvement.
- Deep knowledge of product handling, storage requirements, and spoilage mitigation for a variety of fresh produce.
