Job Description:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Finance Policy Analyst to join our team. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing, drafting, and implementing finance policies that support a robust internal control environment. You will ensure our financial framework remains compliant with international regulatory and reporting requirements while supporting the British Council’s strategic objectives in a complex, global charitable environment.

Requirements:

  • Policy Design & Implementation: Draft and update finance and accounting policies, including chapters of the Accounting Manual. Ensure all guidance is clear, accessible, and easily understood by non-finance professionals.

  • Compliance & Control: Design processes to mitigate risks (including sanctions and prohibited transactions) and contribute to entity-wide financial governance. Maintain the framework of financial delegated authorities.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a champion for financial compliance, providing expert advice to internal stakeholders and collaborating with outsourced service providers to embed effective controls.

  • Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to automate controls and embed "compliance by design." You will represent the finance function in change management forums to ensure proportionate controls are integrated into new business processes.

  • Subject Expertise: Stay updated on UK GAAP, accounting standards, and relevant legislation, advising the organization on the impact of these changes.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Professional Background: An undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience is essential. A recognized international accounting or finance qualification (e.g., CCAB) is required.

  • Core Competencies:

    • Proven experience in designing and documenting finance policies, processes, and guidance.

    • Strong drafting skills with the ability to simplify complex concepts.

    • Excellent analytical skills and experience in managing compliance for large, complex organizations.

    • Demonstrated ability to consult with stakeholders and navigate diverse viewpoints.

    • Knowledge of UK GAAP and the application of financial reporting standards.

  • Mindset: A high degree of flexibility, independence, and initiative to thrive in a rapidly changing environment.
