Jaza is a solar energy start-up working to power Sub-Saharan Africa. We build solar-powered shops which charge batteries customers use to power their homes. In 2022, we achieved over 1.5 million battery swaps, providing approximately 186,000 people access to clean, affordable energy. We employ women from each community (known as Jaza Stars) to run the service, empowering our team to become leaders, entrepreneurs and drivers of economic growth within their communities. We’ve already successfully entered the Nigerian market, piloted several sites here and will grow to hundreds of locations over the next year. To support this expansion, we’re planning to hire over 200 people over the next 6 months.

Job Description:

We are seeking a versatile and execution-driven Expansion Construction Engineer to spearhead our physical growth into new territories. You will be the sole owner of the "Site Lifecycle"—from scouting and negotiating leases for shops or land to managing the final installation of our specialized solar-ready hubs.

This role requires a unique blend of real estate negotiation, civil engineering oversight, and project management. You will be responsible for ensuring that every new location meets our rigid structural and electrical standards while managing external contractors to deliver on time and within budget. If you are a problem-solver who enjoys working in the field and can turn a blueprint into a functional service hub, we want you on our expansion team.

Requirements:

1. Site Acquisition & Lease Management

• Location Scouting: Identify and assess shops or plots of land in target regions that meet specific technical and commercial criteria.

• Negotiation & Leasing: Lead the acquisition process, ensuring favorable lease terms and compliance with legal standards.

• Site Feasibility: Perform critical assessments of existing structures to identify renovation needs or structural constraints for solar installations.

2. Construction & Renovation Oversight

• Hub Installation: Manage the full-cycle renovation and structural assembly of service hubs, ensuring they meet customized design specifications.

• Vendor & Supply Management: Source and manage furniture manufacturers and construction contractors; oversee the procurement and delivery of all tools and equipment.

• Structural Integrity: Interpret blueprints and design specs to ensure sites can support the technical requirements of solar-powered infrastructure.

3. Quality Governance & Reporting

• Compliance & Auditing: Enforce strict quality checklists during the acquisition and construction phases; perform final site audits before official sign-off.

• Timeline Management: Coordinate with Supply Chain and Engineering teams to ensure furniture and equipment availability, preventing delays in the expansion roadmap.

• Milestone Documentation: Utilize data collection and analytical skills to report on construction progress, tool requirements, and budget utilization.

Qualifications and Skills:

Professional Profile

• Education: Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.

• Experience: Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in site acquisition, renovation, or retail roll-outs.

• Mobility: Must be willing to travel frequently to remote locations and interact with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.

Core Competencies

• Blueprint Literacy: Ability to interpret complex blueprints, especially for solar-ready structural and electrical needs.

• Negotiation Skills: Proven ability to negotiate leases and manage contractors effectively.

• Critical Thinking: Skill in solving unique construction challenges when retrofitting existing "already built" shops.

• Technical Communication: Ability to explain complex engineering concepts to non-technical suppliers and landlords.
