Job Description:

  • The Accountant is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations in the company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in financial reporting and transaction processing.
  • Reporting to the Head of Finance, the role provides hands-on management of the accounting function, supervising the Accounts Associate and directly handling higher-level tasks such as financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and process improvements.

Core functions

  • Financial Management and Oversight: Supervise all accounting operations, including accounts receivable/payable, general ledger, and cost accounting, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Manage and mentor the accounts team, conduct appraisals, and develop capacity to deliver organizational goals.
  • Reporting and Period-End Close: Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and ensure timely completion of period-end closing activities.
  • Internal Controls and Compliance: Establish, monitor, and enforce robust internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure adherence to statutory and tax obligations.
  • Business Support and Process Improvement: Partner with other departments to provide financial insights and drive continuous improvement initiatives in accounting processes.
  • Tax Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable transaction taxes (VAT, WHT, PAYE, etc.), including accurate filing, remittances, and preparation of tax schedules to avoid penalties.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Professional certification (e.g., ACA, ACCA) required.
  • Must have 5-7 years accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role, preferably in a manufacturing or FMCG environment.
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS and financial management practices.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian tax laws (VAT, WHT, PAYE, Company Income Tax) and experience in ensuring tax compliance.
  • Proven track record of leading teams and delivering results in a fast-paced setting.

Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in general ledger accounting, financial reporting, cost accounting, and inventory management.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, QuickBooks, Sage).
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial analysis skills.

Soft / Power Skills:

  • Strong leadership and people management skills; ability to mentor and inspire a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate across departments.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a focus on process improvement and innovation.
  • High integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
