- This role requires a seasoned legal professional who can provide sound legal guidance, oversee documentation processes, manage risk exposure, and ensure full regulatory compliance across all business operations.
Job Summary
- We are seeking a highly competent and detail-oriented Head of Legal to lead the legal function of a growing real estate organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all legal documentation, contracts, property transactions, regulatory filings, corporate governance matters, and dispute resolution processes.
- This role requires a proactive leader who can manage legal risks, structure compliant real estate transactions, support executive decision-making, and ensure that all business operations align with Nigerian legal and regulatory frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the company’s legal department and oversee all legal operations.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts including property acquisition agreements, joint venture agreements, construction contracts, vendor agreements, and lease agreements.
- Oversee land documentation processes including title verification, due diligence, deed preparation, and registration.
- Ensure compliance with Nigerian property laws, corporate regulations, and government requirements.
- Manage regulatory filings and statutory documentation with relevant authorities.
- Provide legal advisory support to executive management on strategic and operational matters.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks across all company projects and transactions.
- Handle dispute resolution, litigation management, and external counsel coordination when necessary.
- Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping of all legal and corporate documents.
- Support corporate governance processes including board resolutions, policy drafting, and internal compliance frameworks.
- Guide the company on employment law matters, compliance obligations, and contractual best practices.
- Stay updated on changes in Nigerian real estate, corporate, and commercial laws.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognized institution with 5–10 years’ post-call experience, preferably within real estate, property development, or corporate law practice.
- Called to the Nigerian Bar (BL) and licensed to practice law in Nigeria.
- Proven experience handling land transactions, property documentation, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong understanding of Nigerian corporate law, real estate law, contract law, and regulatory frameworks.
- Demonstrated experience leading legal teams or functioning in a senior legal management role.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
- Strong risk management and strategic advisory capability.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional ethics.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, multi-project environment.
- Experience working closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams is an added advantage.
