Job Description:
NaijaEyes is looking for a relentless, news-obsessed Breaking News Editor to anchor our real-time coverage. In this role, speed is your currency, but accuracy is your reputation. You will be responsible for patrolling the digital landscape 24/7—from the halls of government to the trending topics on X and TikTok—ensuring we are the first to break the stories that matter to Nigerians. If you thrive under the intense pressure of a "Speed-First" protocol, have a mastery of SEO, and can spot a fake news story from a mile away, you are the talent we need.
Requirements:
1. Monitoring & Rapid Response
Digital Patrol: Monitor international news wires, government handles, and local social media trends (X, TikTok, WhatsApp) around the clock.
"Speed-First" Protocol: Execute our 5-minute mandate—drafting and publishing a headline and summary within 5 minutes of a major breaking event.
Story Enhancement: Enrich every post with relevant multimedia, including photos, videos, or social media embeds to drive engagement and dwell time.
2. Editorial Excellence & SEO Mastery
Inverted Pyramid Writing: Apply the "Inverted Pyramid" style to all copy, ensuring the most critical information is delivered immediately.
Headline Engineering: Craft catchy, high-CTR headlines optimized for Google Search, Google News, and Discover.
Technical SEO: Execute keyword placement, meta-description drafting, and alt-text optimization using tools like Yoast or RankMath.
3. Verification & Ethics
Fact-Checking: Rigorously verify "viral gist" using Google Reverse Image Search and other investigative tools to eliminate fake news and misinformation.
Legal Compliance: Maintain a deep understanding of Nigerian media law and digital ethics to avoid defamation and copyright issues.
Qualifications and Skills:
Technical Skills
Platforms: High proficiency in WordPress (Gutenberg editor) and tools like TweetDeck/X Pro.
SEO & Analytics: Knowledge of writing specifically to rank on Google News.
Verification Tools: Expert use of tools to authenticate digital media and sources.
Experience & Attributes
Proven Tenure: 1–3 years in a high-pressure digital newsroom or blog environment.
Academic Background: Degree in Journalism or Mass Communication.
Interest: An obsessive interest in Nigerian politics, national security, and global affairs.
Work Ethic: Willingness to work dedicated night shifts or weekend rotations (Remote options available).
